What Are We?

We are all something. Some of us really care about the environment around us. Other kind of do, or just don’t, at all. I, for one, am a consumer which is definatley not something to be proud of. I admit that I can be a little spoiled at times.  When I see something I like, I must have it. Even if I don’t love it. Sometimes I only use what I want once, or I don’t use it at all. But I am never going to realize how much it can damage out Earth and the life on it. This thing has become a habit to me.

A comsumer is one who will take and use as much as they want whenever they want. Not caring about anything or anyone else. This is what I do. For example, if I go to the mall and go into a store such as Pink, if I see something and I like it, I get it. Even if it’s a lot of money, or uses a lot of fabric. Also, at home I take showers that range from about thirty to fifty minutes, or even an hour. Wasting too much water. And while I’m in the shower, I leave both the radio and tv on so that there’s noise when I get out because when there isn’t, I tend to get scared.

I feel that being a conserver is and should be the way to go out of all the categories. They are one who will take only what they absolutely need so that more will remain when they need it later. Unlike the preserver, they actually use things. But only if they really need it for a specific reason. I personally have been thinking that preservers are going too far. There are many things in life, like food and drinks, that we absolutely need in order to survive in this world. So if they don’t take these things, they could end up dying.

If everyone takes what they need and only that, we could easily all benifit from it in many ways. We all need some things, just not too much of something. Much like the “Common Good” penny game. In this game, we all had to sacrafice getting a lot of something so that everyone could have some of that thing and benifit from it in the same way.  By doing this, we would all get a little of what we want, and more of what we absolutely need. Then, hopefully, the water will be as blue as the sky. And we will all live a long life.

    Amanda,

It can be hard to inward to see something about yourself you do not like. I appreciate your effort here to do so. I don’t agree that you are “never going to realize how much [consuming] can damage our earth.” It sounds like you already know!

Start would be things you know have an impact and try to change them. How might you down the shower time to 20 or 30 minutes? Can you set limits for how many things you might buy in one trip to the mall? Little effort to make a difference!
